Money & Currency
The official currency is the Jamaican Dollar (JMD). While United States Dollars (USD) are widely accepted in tourist areas, major hotels, and large supermarkets, you will always get a more accurate exchange rate if you pay for local goods in JMD.
Cards vs Cash
Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere. However, if you are buying pan chicken on the side of the road, taking a local route taxi, or tipping bellhops, you must have local cash.
Where to Exchange
Avoid the exchange kiosks at the airport (their rates are usually terrible). Instead, use your foreign debit card at a local Scotiabank or NCB ATM to pull out JMD directly at the daily bank rate.

Cell Service & WiFi
Do not pay your home carrier exorbitant international roaming fees. Jamaica has excellent 4G/LTE coverage across the entire island through two main telecommunications providers: Digicel and Flow.
Generally considered to have slightly wider coverage in deep rural areas (like the Blue Mountains or south coast). You can buy a tourist SIM card directly in the arrivals hall at the airport.
Excellent high-speed data coverage in all major towns and tourist hubs (MoBay, Kingston, Negril, Ochi). Often runs slightly cheaper prepaid data plans for extended stays.
Pro Tip: Use an eSIM. If your phone supports eSIM technology, download the Airalo app before you fly. You can buy a Jamaican data package instantly without removing your physical home SIM card.
Stay Connected
4G LTE is available island-wide.
Getting Around Safely
Public transportation in Jamaica is an adventure. If you want comfort, reliability, and safety, stick to these official methods to navigate the island.
Knutsford Express
The premier luxury coach bus. It is air-conditioned, has WiFi, and safely connects every major city (Kingston, MoBay, Ocho Rios, Negril). Highly recommended for inter-parish travel.

JUTA operators are certified tourist drivers. If taking a regular local route taxi, only enter vehicles with red license plates—these are legally insured public passenger vehicles.
Car Rentals
Renting a car gives you ultimate freedom. We drive on the left side of the road. Stick to reputable dealers like Stewart's Auto, and be prepared for potholes if you venture off the main highways.
Travel Insurance is Crucial.
Jamaica is beautiful, but medical emergencies or trip cancellations can be incredibly expensive. Top-tier local private hospitals (like Hospiten in Montego Bay) require upfront payment or guaranteed insurance confirmation before treatment.
Whether it is a sprained ankle at a waterfall, lost luggage, or a delayed flight out of MBJ, you need coverage. We recommend comprehensive travel medical insurance tailored for international travelers.
